Assorted OS X Stuff

As you might have guessed from the text on the front page, I have just bought a nice machine running OS X.. if you've just did the same, some links to applications you'll want:

  • New: How to get your iBook battery capacity back!
  • Playing ogg-vorbis using iTunes
  • GLTerm
This is a good terminal emulator, lots better than the thing shipped with OS X 10.1, recommended A+++, to put it in Ebay style. It is shareware, registering costs you $10, if not, you'll be bothered by (infrequent) popups.
  • App Switcher
This is a small hack which enables alt-tab like switching in OS X. Helps you from injuring yourself with RSI.
  • Latex for Mac OS X
This is a nice download! A complete LaTeX suite for Mac OS X, works like a charm over here. It features a nice hassle-free installer, and is a complete installation, no more fuzzling with fonts, no need to worry about where to find a ps2pdf converter, etc. etc. Only downside is that it doesn't include xdvi - but since pdflatex is included in this distribution, that doesn't really matter.
  • Enhanced Carbon Emacs
Also another very good (albeit huge, 33MB) download! If you want to use Emacs, use this one. Quoting the download-page itself:
This emacs is based on the standard emacs-21.3.50 CVS distribution, enhanced with many packages, including a fully customisable LaTeX editing environment based on AucTeX, RefTeX and other packages. There is no need to have X11 installed; MacOS X Jaguar (10.2.2) is required. From emacs, you can launch directly any latex process or any mac application (like MacDvi, MacGhostView, Acrobat Reader, TexShop, OzTeX, etc) on files or regions you are working on.
  • MacDviX
Still trying to find a reload-button in acrobat reader when working with LaTeX? You can also create dvi's with it, and view them with this program. A quote from the TeX Tools for OS X page:
MacDviX is special version of macdvi which integrates easily with teTeX. MacDviX uses the teTeX texmf tree to load tfm and vf files and uses the teTeX program mktexpk to generate missing pk fonts. It will automatically update the preview of an opened dvi file if that file is changed by another program.

More to follow as I find out more on OS X!
